To celebrate the last weekend of Island Time: Galveston Artist Residency – The First Four Years, CAMH has partnered with the Houston Grand Opera for a special pop-up performance in the galleries.

Select artists from the Houston Grand Opera will present a preview of The Root of the Wind Is Water, a new chamber opera set in Galveston that will have its world premiere in Houston and Galveston this May. Created by a team of fast-emerging artists—composer David Hanlon, librettist Stephanie Fleischmann, and director Matthew Ozawa—The Root of the Wind Is Water was developed through historical research and interviews with members of the Galveston and Houston communities.

Learn more about the opera at www.hgo.org/root. The performance will be 7-10 minutes in length so be sure and arrive on time so you don’t miss it! Stay after for a lecture and book signing by David Getsy at 2 pm.

About the Performance

About the Opera:
As a massive hurricane hurtles towards the Gulf Coast, a Galvestonian torn about whether to leave her home is haunted by storms past. A story of loss, resilience, and the power of community, The Root of the Wind Is Water mines the legacy of the Great Storm of 1900 and Hurricane Ike in 2008 on the region. This riveting new chamber opera, rooted in one family’s crisis, was developed through historical research and interviews with residents of Galveston.
