CAMH is pleased to present A Fool for Jeffrey’s Sake (2015), a live performance by Jeffrey Vallance in collaboration with Reverend Ethan Acres. For this performance, Reverend Acres will assume the character of a Lutheran Minister who has come to God through Jeffrey Vallance’s artist book, The Vallance Bible (2011).

About the Performance

Jeffrey Vallance has been a legendary figure of the Los Angeles art scene since the 1970s when his seminal pranksterish artwork “Blinky the Friendly Hen” set the bar for illusory, comical, conceptual art. Vallance’s influence on the LA art community cannot be overemphasized, he essentially founded an entire range of genre-blurring activities that continue to inspire generations of younger artists. His innovative curatorial models combine non-hierarchical collaborative strategies with institutional mimicry and infiltration. Many artists, writers, and curators point to Vallance as one of the most influential Los Angeles based artists of the last half-century.

Reverend Ethan Acres was born in Alabama and creates scripture-based performances and mixed-media sculpture that shock and surprise with their sensationalism, whimsy, kitsch, and ostentation. Acres received his BFA from University of Texas Austin and an MFA from the University of Nevada Las Vegas and an honorary doctorate of divinity from the online, mail-order World Christianship Ministries in Fresno, California, and he is fond of saying that he puts the "fun back in fundamentalism." Rev. Acres has performed and exhibited in the Sacred Arts Biennial, The Vatican, Rome, Italy; Corcoran Gallery Biennial, Washington DC; Grand Central Arts Center, Fullerton, CA; Patricia Faure Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; The Santa Monica Museum of Art, Santa Monica, CA; and Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm, Sweden.
