Back to the 80’s Gala – 35th Anniversary Celebration – Amazing Results

Friday, Oct. 30, 2015 – Monday, Nov. 30, 2015

The Children’s Museum of Houston experienced a blast from the past for this year’s “Back to the 80’s – 35th Anniversary Celebration” 2015 Gala presented by BB&T and Phillips 66, raising $1.1 million despite the “time warp” type of weather conditions. This rockin’ event, inspired by the year the Museum came to be, transported the spirit and essence of the 1980s into Silver Street Studios on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015.

About the Fundraiser

Event chairs Carmen and Butch Mach and Courtney and Bill Toomey played host to a totally rad gala in hopes of further developing the Museum’s educational and outreach programs. About 500 of the most generous community leaders and local supporters braved the stormy weather to dress up in glam 80s attire and head back in time to become enthralled by Darryl & Co.’s stellar décor, stimulating sights and sounds, including a righteous PAC-MAN dance floor, a montage of 80s MTV music videos, and rockin’ the night away to outrageous jams by 1980s cover band The Spazmatics presented by J&D Entertainment. Jackson & Company’s multi-course menu had guests noshing on a feast of delicacies, including herb crusted beef tenderloin medallions served with potatoes fines herbes gratinnee and monkey bread. Alternating desserts included Jawbreakers cake and Mr. and Mrs. Pac-Man lemon mousse. Tiny ice cream drumsticks, popcorn, Steak-Umms sliders and chilled cans of TAB were served as late night offerings.

There was a special “Back to the Future” appearance by Marty McFly, Doc Brown and a circa 1980s DeLorean, just three days after, Oct. 21, 2015, the very same date Marty McFly travelled to in “Back To The Future: Part II.” Coincidence?

Amongst the exquisite auction items was a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust watch donated by Deutsch & Deutsch Jewelers. Raffle tickets for the $19,500 Rolex were sold for $100 each. The winner of the Rolex was Ms. Nushan Daryabeygi, a customer of BB&T who purchased her ticket at the Cinco Ranch Branch. Cynthia and Mac Walker, perhaps the happiest couple of the night, won an adorable labradoodle puppy during the auction.

At the top of the list of party-goers were: Saha and Kevin Alexander, Devinder and Gina Bhatia, Jennifer and Chris Laporte, Julie Sudduth, Ashlee and Benton Love, Julie and Alan Kent, The Mach Family- Cora Sue and Harry Mach and Joella and Steve Mach, Christie and Billy McCartney, Viviana and David Denechaud, Carrie and John Vallone, Houston Astros Jed Lowrie and wife Milessa, Houston Astros’ General Manager Jeff Luhnow and wife Gina, Jared Crane and Adrienne Sayward, Lance Deutsch, Harrison Cullen and Lilly Lewis , Claudia Kreisle, Phillips 66 underwriters, Lindley and Jason Arnoldy, and Carolyn Dorros to name a few.

On the Museum’s 35th anniversary year celebration, it was a family affair of longtime board members having their children at the event to carry on their legacy. Past Museum board members included: Katherine and Paul Murphy, Randy and Laurie Allen and daughter Morgan Allen, Virginia and Lee Lahourcade. Current board members included: Current Board President Geoff Bracken and wife Shelley, Dan and Mollie Castaneda, Leslie and Jack Blanton, Jr. and daughters Elizabeth Blanton and Mary Catherine and her husband Bailey Jones, Dr. Bob and Dottie McCallister, Winnie Simmons and Nicholas Phillips, Gina and Carl Luna, Kim and Randy Petersen, Glen Gonzalez and Steve Summers, Steve and Pam Daniel, and Brad and Lauren Morgan.
